Today I read an interesting blog by Koenraad Elst on the Ayodhya verdict. He very precisely put it that Ayodhya is a matter of faith for the Hindus above all the other evidence available. It made me think why can't these issues be solved by without being political. He simply highlighted that many developed countries have solved these problems in an effective manner and we should also do so.
Another interesting read was in Hindustan Times editorial yesterday which talked about the dispute from the perspective of two average citizens one Hindu & one Muslim. Both from the same profession of gardening who easily recommended that the holy land should be planted with beautiful trees & shrubbery for the peace to prevail.
My point is that peace should prevail & I feel that if the whole world & universe is an entity of the supreme being whatever name you call it Bhagwaan, God etc. would it matter to him if a mosque or a temple was built on the land. Which again is just a piece of 2-3 acres. And why can't both exist in the same space as the courts have ruled.
I think the average citizens don't care about these things more so the younger generation which is good. It shows that they have started thinking. But still the need is that the political parties/people should stop stoking the embers to throw the nation into another communal fire. Hindus and Muslims both have created some structures on the same piece of land and the structures have crumbled. This points to the fact that nothing stays, everything changes with time.
And now the time has come to change so that our country progresses. The change should not be regressive that drags us behind. Hope that some day we the Indians will rise above the issues of you, me, religion, caste and make our country a truly global power not just a paper super power.
we need to work towards it collectively.

New found love of statues & memorials in India
I was just watching Barkha Dutt's -- 'The buck stops here' on NDTV. She was discussing with four/five eminent personalities about the freedom to discuss whether India requires the new memorials & statues.
Anyways, I didn't go through the whole intellectual masturbation so don't know what was the conclusion or the exact discussion point.
I have been thinking on writing about this after reading about the mammoth parks, statues & memorials being erected in Uttar Pradesh. I think all these politicians & bureaucrats are stooping so low to gather votes that they are wasting millions of Rupees. I have included bureaucrats because if they want then nothing can move in India.
Recently there has been an increase in this phenomenon of going crazy with erecting so called memorials to put an imprint of their legacy. I think these politicians are missing a moot point here that a good ruler is one who rules in the hearts of the citizens not through gimmicks. But maybe they are right as they have been winning elections and I am being old school.
Still I feel this is all a waste of resources what with INR 2500 crore being wasted on memorials. Think what could have been done with this amount of money. Lakhs of uneducated children could have been sent school, the same amount could have been used to increase agricultural productivity and even the same amount could have been used to protect our ancient monuments if the fixation for the buildings was so great.
Today's ruling class is lacking creativity. They are coming with weird ideas to waste money & glorify themselves. Don't know what to say of it and if anyone will stop this as we all are becoming very good at turning a blind eye to the issues related to our country. Maybe as we are more concerned with our survival.
I will end this by repeating an earlier line that may the gods & goddesses of India steer the country at the right time on the correct path lest it goes on a downward spiral instead of developing.

Is India developing or just growing.......
India is developing and growing at a tremendous rate. It is the second most lucrative market in the world now after China. There have been numerous reports and news articles that India our great country is developing and will challenge any financial or military power.
But then why is so that whenever I drive down on an Indian road I feel restless. It seems that though everyone has got the money to buy new & shiny cars, including me, still the the quality standard or the infratructure is changing at a far lesser pace.
Why is it that when I move around any city in India I am ashamed of the state they are in. All of them unclean fill of rubble & everyone doing their bit to make them more dirty.
Amazingly Delhi, the capital of India, the jewel, has a typical distinction. From three sides if you enter the city one will encounter mountain of the city's waste. Be it the Karnal bypass, be it the entry border from Ghaziabad or be it the entry from Faridabad in Okhla. This is the state of our capital what to say of other cities. To top it all every time it rains you have traffic snarls which make the citizens sit for hours on the roads wasting precious time & resources.
To add to it we still don't have the basic necessities of water & electricity. Millions of gallons of rain water is wasted & goes into the sewers. But nothing is done to save it. So much of electricity wasted in giving hotlines to politicians but nothing done to provide it to the citizens. We pay for the water but has anyone questioned that why the water is not potable. Why is there a need to install a water purifier system.
Okay, some of the population can afford these systems but what about the 90% of the population who can't. And no one notices the amount of water wasted while purifying the water for one to drink.
Why is it that when I am flying in the commercial capital of India it feels that I am going to land on shanties (jhopad patti). Why it seems that India lives & sleeps on the roads only.
Why do I feel sad when I see green & fertile land overtaken by the concrete jungles. A perfect example is Greater Noida a place where land was & is very fertile. But due to political motivations and proximity to Delhi it was converted into industrial township. Why couldn't this have been done in Rajasthan or Madhya Pradesh or places where agriculture is not happening or the yield is low instead of destroying acres of fertile lands and making them into concrete jungles.
Why is it that I am afraid to leave my family alone. You are afraid to send the female members alone while travelling. You are afraid to approach the police even when you know that you are right.
Why do I feel that there is something happening that is not right. I am still looking for these answers and I am not very clear to where to look for a logical reasoning.
However, I feel that in terms of development we are not doing anything. Our internal security is going down. The law & order state is worsening day by day as all are involved and no body wants to do anything which troubles the old balance. There is no support for the economical weaker class. The education system has started decaying.
There has not one consistent effort by any government or civil society members or elite or bureaucracy to look at developing India. Our country is merely growing and everyone is making money. But this can't continue for long. If a sustained development plan is not formed then in years to come, when we grow old there will not be anything left to live for in our motherland.
As everyone says that India is run 'Ram bharose" maybe the God's will have to intervene and save their favorite country. Hope this happens sooner.......

Will 7 new IIM's make a difference?
Well it's been quite some time that I wrote. Though I had even barely started but then one I was too lazy to write and second was not in the correct mood.
Anyhow, I just read the news that the government has proposed opening of 7 new IIM's in different regions including the state I lived in for 20 years Haryana. This made me thinking that do we actually need 7 new IIM's? Will the new IIM's make any difference?
There has already been a debate that this will dilute the IIM brand to which I partially agree. But the main point is that spending 1000 crore INR on opening institutes is it judicious or just a political gimmick trying to dissuade the political allies.
There are thousands of management institutes & colleges which are being run by the government universities. These Uni's give a MBA degree since they are a university but they hardly make any difference to the personality & thinking of the students.
The old IIM's (barring the new ones in Indore, Kozhikode etc) hone the skills of the students, they make them understand the business world, open their minds and allow them to have a different point of view. On the other hand these university b-schools just dish out management grads & degrees without even thinking what are they teaching to their students.
Let's take an example of Kurukshetra university which runs 5-6 management courses in its main campus under different departments and then add to it various affiliated institutes. Even in the main campus the students are just mugging up the books to just clear the exams. They are not made to focus on the practical part and being away from the main industrial hubs the industry interaction is bare minimum rendering them ill equipped for the real world.
I feel the same might start happening with the new IIM's. How will one maintain the similar standard. And where will the students get the exposure while sitting in Srinagar or in Shillong.
Shockingly, even institutes which are closer to industrial hubs are not able to set any standards. I once took some guest lectures in consumer behavior in a government run school in Noida. And I made the mistake of starting my class with a case. Surprisingly for me though, not a single student knew what the subject was all about. They actually wanted the teacher or a visiting faculty to spoon feed them rather than applying their minds to solve problems.
This is a deep malaise which is now eating our education system like termites. We are slowly loosing the edge. Every year lakhs of engineers & management grads are dished out who are barely equipped to work. If this goes on the famed Indian education system will die.
The government think tanks are just trying to cash in on the brands and not just apply their minds to create new brands. Look at the US of A whom everyone follows then you see there are not many campuses of the same school. In fact there are so many good schools and people are still working on to create new and better schools.
So instead of wasting 1000 crore of rupees on opening new institutes the same amount should be spent on improving the standards of the current schools. Try to build new brands. Equip the students with new techniques rather than spoiling their careers by making them mugging machines and incompetent for the corporate world.
Hope someone will listen.... Mr Sibal?

My 300 Km motorbike road trip in 2007
Prologue: To start with the background, Royal Enfield motorbikes have a cult following in India just the way Harley is to USA.
I bought one 350cc Royal Enfield – “Bullet” motorbike about 4 months back. It was an impulsive purchase. Although I always yearned to have the Bullet and go on long road trips but couldn’t buy, so when this opportunity came along I just bought it without even checking the condition. This impulsive decision left my pocket unhappy by some thousand Rupees.
Still the euphoria of Bullet was so much that it didn’t matter at that time.
The ride:
The fateful day I selected for my road trip was Sunday the 8th Of Apr’07. It was a home trip, the motorbike was in Chandigarh for 4 months that is 300 Km’s away from Faridabad (near Delhi, where I live). The road trip was planned earlier in Feb’07 but at that time the engine started leaking and I had to abort the trip.
This time I was determined to tame the beast and burn the road. I reached Chandigarh on Saturday morning at 11 Am. Straight away checked the condition of the bike. It seemed all well, in the evening went around to meet an old friend this way the bike was tested as well.
To be honest riding the Bullet is a great feeling. It is not a modern day bike with all the horse power and the sound. It is like an old world charm, the 350 cc engine gives out 18bhp and a loud thump. It’s such an exhilarating feeling riding the machine that you cannot explain in words. You have to ride one to feel.
The bike is still manufactured in the same way it used to be in the 1960’s the only difference is the advancement in the shockers, ignition and the carburettor and the weight has been reduced to 160Kg’s from 280 Kg. Although there are newer models based on the same platform but they are not that fun to ride.
The first time I rode the bike it was like riding a big black bull which has to be controlled properly one wrong move and you will end up breaking your leg.
8th Apr’07: I had planned to start the trip at 8 am but then delayed it by 2.5 hrs just to relax and prepare for the ride. I have been riding bikes for 12 years but most of the times those bikes were 100cc or 150cc which are lighter technologically advanced and easier to handle. But going on a Bullet was like preparing yourself for the ultimate experience like a ‘Matador’ at the bull arena.
Started at 10.20 Am and refuelled the bike. Then hit the main highway at 10.30 am. There was a light and cool breeze and the bike seemed eager to gallop the miles.
I had gone for around 15 Km’s when the bike suddenly stopped. Since, I am a new ‘Bulleteer’ I thought that was my fault, stopped for 2 minutes kick started and then thumped again. After another 5 Km’s the bike engine stopped again, it made me worry a bit but after 10 kicks I started the beast again and started thumping.
Then the bike developed a strange habit of stopping after every 4-5 Km’s and wouldn’t start before I had tried kick starting it minimum 10 times (one most know that kicking the bullet is no joke as the powerful kickback can break your ankle). This made me feel that it might take the whole day reaching Faridabad. After that the bike gave two blasts from the silencer like a gun has been fired. It seemed that the spark started malfunctioning and I decided to get the bike checked by a mechanic so I stopped at a road side repair shop after 35 Km’s.
The mechanic checked the bike while I drank cold water and dried the sweat due to kicking the bike at regular intervals. The mechanic gave a green signal and I hit the road once again.
The bike stopped only twice after that and I started feeling comfortable handling it. It was behaving the way I wanted and I opened the throttle to touch a speed of 75 Km/hr. Before that I was doing around 50-60Km/hr due to the regular stoppage. I was cruising at 80 Km/hr when I noticed oil all around my jeans. My eyes looked down at the engine and lo & behold there was oil all over and a trail of oil leakage. It scared me to my wits end and made me stop immediately. On inspection the culprit was a rubber pipe from engine head which burst and was now gurgling out oil. Well that broke all my determination of controlling the beast and going on a road trip. Then I took a decision to abort the whole trip and park the bike at my relative’s home. But I didn’t lose heart and started thumping ahead at a lower speed again. I thumped 110 Km’s and reached their home and parked the bike there, where it is still resting. It took me 3 hours to travel those 110 Km.
And with that my 300 Km road trip got reduced to 110 Km, although I was heart broken in some way but still it was an enjoyable trip. The feeling is still there and I hope to conquer the beast some other day.

Delhi Driving an experience..

Well, as you can guess from the title I would be writing about driving in Delhi the capital of India. It's been 9.5 years from the time I landed in Delhi & started driving on Delhi roads.
All this time I have been travelling on Delhi roads using different modes of travel from a motorcycle - my 150 cc Suzuki Fiero to cars- M800, Santro, SX4 & the killer greenline buses. It has been an experience all through these years.
However, driving on Delhi's roads currently just makes me remind of the movie 'Matrix'. Sitting on the driving seat looking ahead you can see a biker doing a Keanu Reeves avoiding the cars & buses like Neo evaded bullets in the movie. Another Neo in a car drives on the road avoiding the pedestrians, people on cycles & the bikers. 95% of the time all of these Neo's are able to save themselves as well as others. The same is with the pedestrians who cross the road with their hand towards the traffic as if they were in the Matrix where they can stop the traffic with their hand. Or they were 'Magneto' with powers to stop all the metallic objects. And the one who don't have these powers get killed by the killer buses or lorries or other monsters.
The similarities don't end here since all the Delhi driver's have a precarious habit of driving on a tangent. They drive at an angle as if the straight road or the lanes don't exist, but they are able to drive without hitting others. This again reminds you of people with special powers who are teleconnect or have magnetic powers or the closest possibility is that Delhi is a matrix.
All this is fun observing all these phenomenons while you are driving lest your car is hit or you get involved in an accident. Then you are surrounded by Delhi police virus who will oblieterate you physically or economically like it was done in the movie. The Delhi police or rather the Indian police have the knack of being at the right place so as to be able to inflict more damage on people. However, again all the Delhi'ites have developed the skills like Neo to avoid the Police-virus and save them. Only the weak fall prey to the virus. Recently, I got involved in such an experience. I was waiting in my car to turn right at a turning. The moment I was to start moving, I fel that something hit my car. Since it was 9 PM & being alone I thought it no point arguing with anyone at this time & better to head home, whatever damage I would take care of it. From a humane point of view it was not good but again reading all the stories of road rage I didn't want to get involved in. When I reached home and saw that one corner of the bumper was broken & there were dents on the car, I got a little afraid. But I slept thinking that doesn't matter will get this repaired. The next day dawned & with it there came a surprise. The police came knocking at my door saying that I hit someone & ran away.
I showed them my car & tried to explain that it was no fault of mine but to deaf ears. Since, it was a biker who hit my car & broke his leg the police came to the conclusion that it was the car's fault to be waiting on the road. Ultimately I had to pull some strings & bribe the police to get out of the mess. It was the same like Morphaeus rescuing Neo from the station by bribing the frenchman. So yes there are lot many similarities between driving in Delhi & living in the Matrix.
The only thing is that all this stops when the Neo's, Magnetos' & Morpheus are not able to do anything when there are too many automobiles on the road that there is not an inch to move. Although many are still able to squeeze them in some space but overall everyone grinds to a halt. At this point all become human & lose their special abilities.
The dangerous thing is that this is becoming regular wherein the special abilities are being lost and the roads are getting choked. The same roads of Delhi where driving was fun is now being turned in to snail roads or killer places by the insidious driving by the Delhi Neo's. The untrained drivers on the roads driving on a tangent are making the matters worse. Although the traffic is increasing but disciplined driving & honest traffic police controlling the situation can help.
In my opinion we should start behaving like humans & leave the Matrix out to lead a proper life rather than fighting the machines & viruses on a daily basis.
